Lids have been found on pottery dating back as far as 3100 B.C. They have had a longstanding use as ancient as Egyptian mummification processes, up to the present, where an estimated 14 billion lids of all types were sold in 2009 in the United States alone. In our case, however, we are talking specifically about lids for our handheld totes and plastic bulk bins and pallet containers. Following a modification of Shakespeare’s adage, while some of our customers opt to use lids, we have found that most of our customers don’t use lids with their straight wall containers or Bulk Bins and Plastic Pallet Containers. This post will briefly consider the benefits of both using and not using a lid for your particular storage needs.
Some of the reasons for not using a lid may include situations where, while storing or transporting your goods, there is a need for proper ventilation or air flow to stop possible bacteria build-up due to moisture building up within the boxes. Raw meats and vegetables, for example, typically are not stored with lids as draining and airflow prevent rotting meat and spoiled produce. Convenience can also play a role in whether or not to use a lid, as containers without a lid allow easier access to what is being stored. Ultimately this decision many times comes down to air flow vs. the secure handling of what is being stored.
On the other hand, some customers stress the necessity of lids for their storage needs, as damage can occur to the goods at hand from transportation or forklift accidents. While protecting from debris and inclement weather, lids can also help prevent theft while being shipped. Security tie closures can be added for this concern to secure lids with extra protection.
Take these considerations into consideration when choosing whether lids are an effective storage tool for your particular needs when purchasing.
